Poem: August 25

thinking about how
I want to write a poem
yet words resist,
wrapping around thoughts,
ribbons binding bundles,
of love letters to my soul
beginning "Dear John,"
and ending  "I want to
remain friends, you know
how much I care for you"
these unloving words tumble,
jumble, hide in my attic
forgotten, refusing to reveal
cohesive messages, there
is nothing left of wisdom.
lacking sleep, I recall the
meaning of the date
past midnight, this new day
brings memories of a wedding
long ago, forty two years, in fact
since I stood beside
torment and torture
vowing twelve hateful little
words that bound me
eight years and a lifetime
of self immolation
"for better or for worse
until death do us part"
that life dead long ago,
ever a thorn caught between
then and a future of happiness
the only memories
that bring the hint of smile
are days of dying lilacs
and Queen Anne's Lace
pressed between pages
of ancient scripture
lost in the annals of time

Poem: she sips tea

https://www.publicdomainpictures.net

she sips tea
from a cup
cracked with time
a chalice
imbued with memories
and prophecies
an ancient elixir,
she sips, and recalls
grandmother's
grandmothers,
each generation
a link to the other
contemplating the children,
recalling the wonder in their
every new experience
grown now, poured out
into a world of mystery
and fear
she sips tea
finger raised, ignores
the cracks and
imagines life as if
it were whole

Poem: The Color of Twilight

This, the color of twilight
Breath caught on desert breeze
Gentle whispers of bird on wing
Heart awakened to Westward longings
Memories of tender imaginings
The words falling from fluttered leaves
Turned anticipatory, wide possibilities
Rivers to cross, roads to be wandered
White fenced, Rosie cheeked, aproned
Mother waiting, gregarious, welcome
Homely comfort in a cuppa tea
After adventures in dark forests and
Fiery valleys, Mysterious Others
Turned enemies or friends --
Speaking open doors and closing
Others; hush now the roiling waters
Of curious, cumbersome youth
Listen, hear the softer whispers
Of gentle twilight, and the mews
Of a kitten, curious, searching
For her bed

Poem: Magellan

Image from www.biologos.org

Time travel is impossible, they say,
Yet the new Giant Magellan Telescope
Is expected to see the advent of
The universe, birth of the baby
Planets, life sparks thrown into space
After a Bang so big it resonates
Into today, lights like fireflies
Floating into nothingness
Becoming...Tomorrow
Great mirrors on a mountain
In Chile, mountain made from
Hardened Memories of molten
Birth, pains relieved with cooling
Breath, air and water, created in time
Now dying, for sparks falling into
Human form become the nemesis
Of great and fearful beginnings
Yet we seek, we search to understand
The very memory we shun, the dark
Chaotic form of before,
Before the bang, before the Forces
We do not know came together,
Mother and Father of us all
Will the Great and Powerful
Reflect their Image, will we
One day see the Unknown
In whose image we have been
Crafted, Fiery Sparks to Earthen Mud?

Poem: Bucket List - Twenty-Nine of 30 #NaPoWriMo

The daydreams of another age
Refuse to remain packed
In dusty boxes in ancient attics

Hidden by the responsibilities
Of middle age and memories
A younger self packed and stacked
One upon the other, tightly.
We age; there is no escape
From spots and wattles
Deep set eyes and pouches
Placed from eye to hip, and
Bones that crunch with each step.
We age, and boxes fall,
Revealing dreams of yesteryear
Once remembered, nothing can
Squeeze them back in. Nothing
Can hide them. Revealed, they
Insist on attention: remember me!
What will we do? Make them come true?

Poem: Cygnets

It is the rhythm,
This sense of

Separation, this loss
Breath held,
Forgetting to inhale

A life in
Syncopation

Time stopped, hanging
On memories faded
Without them

What reason to exhale?

Hear the metronome
Accept the new beat
It’s a new verse

It is the rhythm
This sense of
Expectation
