Poem: Too Close

he hovered close, too close
he was close enough for me
to breathe him in
close enough to hear
the low hum of his voice
whispering words I could not
understand
in the corner of my eye,
I saw him sit, too close,
too close...
I reached out unthinkingly
and slapped him away
he fell to the surface
closest to me, and I
looked at him with regret
poor gnat, he never knew
what hit him
